She'd given up any pretense of sleep and moved closer to the fire. The dancing flames threw shadows across her faceor perhaps the shadows came from within. Her chin rested on her knees; her hands clasped her ankles; her shoulders hunched forward, as though the cold penetrated her very bones. Chris grabbed a woven throw from the back of the couch and crossed the room to settle it about her shoulders. She jumped at his touch, then mumbled a "thank you" as she pulled the blanket tighter around her. |
